 'Sing 2': Rich in melody, loose script

The cartoon "Sing 2" has a story that is not new but conquers the audience thanks to its multi-genre music and playful images.

 

Part two of the animated comedy-music franchise hits domestic theaters during the Lunar New Year. Filmmaker Garth Jennings continues to serve as director and screenwriter. Many stars like Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansson, Taron Egerton... reappeared, voicing the characters played in episode one. Some famous singers such as Bono, Pharrell Williams and Halsey contributed.

The work follows the 2016 episode, revolving around the koala bear's dream of becoming a musical director, Buster Moon (voiced by Matthew McConaughey). After initial success, Moon looked for opportunities to take the theater to the next level. However, he was repeatedly rejected by manufacturers to invest. Desperate, Moon reassembles the cast of season one and goes to an audition organized by wolf "boss" Jimmy Crystal. He lied and invited the lion singer Clay Calloway (Bono) - Crystal's idol - to participate. Determination and a bit of recklessness help Moon stand a "once-in-a-lifetime" opportunity but face many troubles and danger to her life. Moon was funded to make a "blockbuster" play, but had to find a way to convince the long-hidden star.

 

The side story follows the hedgehog Ash (Scarlett Johansson) on his journey to convince the lion Clay. The former singer hid behind the death of his wife - the only inspiration for him to compose immortal songs.

 

The script of Sing 2 is not as creative as the first part, but still entertaining enough for a family audience. The crew re-applies many of the tricks that made the first story successful. Humor elements are added moderately, without complexity, bringing laughter to audiences of all ages. However, the scenario does not have many elements of surprise. The audience can easily guess the ending of the movie. The knots also lack tension, making it difficult for the film's climax to achieve an emotional break.

 

The film's ideological theme is bright, encouraging viewers to not be discouraged by difficulties and challenges and confidently pursue their passions. It also encourages people to strike a balance between ambition to succeed and fighting for what's right. Initially, Moon used many tricks to find opportunities to rise. However, he realized that the most important thing in his dream was to make an outstanding play to conquer the audience.

Each supporting character in the film has a story of its own and brings life lessons to young audiences.

Music and images continue to be Sing's bright spots. The crew chose songs of various genres, belonging to different periods. The audience encountered many hits from young singers like Billie Eilish, BTS... to famous songs of many veteran artists such as U2, Elton John, Aretha Franklin, Eminem, Aerosmith.. This makes the soundtrack suitable for both children and parents. Guest star Bono brought a new composition - Your Song Saved My Life - inspired by the script itself.

Compared to the first part, the musical and choreography parts are designed more spectacularly and eye-catching. This direction is suitable for the scenario when Moon's play is well-invested, instead of being independent and spontaneous like the previous episode. The last act of the film also helped Sing 2 have a complete ending, making up for the shortcomings in the script.

 

The film received positive reviews from international audiences and critics, scoring a fresh 70 on Rotten Tomatoes. "If you're looking for a fun animated work with music and choreography, Sing 2 lives up to that expectation," Rotten Tomatoes summarizes from audience comments about the work.a
